Just the Facts

General Lawncare and Sealcoating Q & A.

Lawncare

The estimate:  We estimate the size of the lawn and the obstacles that we need to work around or with, hills, flower boxes, animal waste, etc…  When requested, we can write up your estimate and conveniently leave it in your mailbox or hand it to you in person.

Our basic mow service, what to expect:  We mow the lawn at the customers desired height. Then we weed eat around home and obstacles. Anything more than that would be additional fees such as small tree and bush removal, and landscaping.  (Dollar amount will be listed on job estimate.)

How long should I wait in between mows?  Generally, we like when we can mow your lawn weekly. Sometimes depending on the weather, then more often or less.

Sealcoating

The estimate, what you should expect:  When we estimate a Driveway we judge the age of the last seal, condition of the driveway, how much prep is involved.  When requested, we can write up your estimate and conveniently leave it in your mailbox or hand it to you in person.

Driveway prep:  Driveway prepping involves edging using handheld tools to find your edge removing dirt and grass. Prepping may also involve adding a solvent on the driveway to allow for oil spots to seal over which may incur additional charges.  (Dollar amount will be listed on job estimate.)

Crack repair:  Hot Tar Crack Repair is part of the prep process when sealing a parking lot or driveway. Using hot tar to fill in deep or widening cracks that sealer cannot fill is the best way to go.  This too will incur additional costs. (Dollar amount will be listed on job estimate.)

Repair holes or divots:  Hot Asphalt Patch Repair, involves cleaning out the hole or divot, applying heat and tar, and then adding in hot asphalt to desired level then flattening or compacting down to marry the asphalt together.  (Dollar amount will be listed on job estimate.)

What type of sealer do we use?  We used to Sealmaster LV, but as recently as last year we have switched brands to Taconite, Coal Tar Sealer which delivers a smooth black finish. Tarconite provides up to 50% greater wear than non-fortified sealers, making it ideal for high-traffic areas, while protecting for pennies a square foot, preventing costly repairs. It also meets and exceeds rigorous FAA requirements for airport pavements and meets Government and ASTM Specifications.

How do we apply the sealer?   We broom because it is less maintenance. The way we broom we like to leave a nice even painted on look to the surface. Spraying has its advantages as well, but we prefer a nice whole pictured look, edges nice and tidy and a well painted driveway. We have seen arguments that spraying does not leave lines and gives an even appearance. I have seen that it indeed does leave lines once the surface wares. It depends on how it is applied either broom or spray and technique.

When and how often should you seal your driveway?  We recommend at least every 3 years. The longer it goes though the more likely you will lose the sealer that was filling your very small holes thus needing additional sealer, costing the consumer more to seal. Some people though like there driveway done yearly so they can have that nice, pictured look, especially when entertaining guests.

Testimonials

Skully's gave us a great price and did an outstanding job on our driveway!  We haven't had it sealcoated in several years and had cracks and some small holes.  Chris and his team prepped and started work.  After a short time, all the cracks and the pot holes were filled and the driveway sealed.  Almost looks new again!!!
